The article "Google: A New Tool for U.S. Intelligence?" says that originally intelligence agencies have always used top-secret information to learn about the changes in countries. However, now they choose to use an easier, more affective way, using Google Trends, a way to look at what people focus on by mapping out their Google searches.
ReplyDeleteThis relates to what Friedman was saying because Google can be used around the world, by anyone. Google plays a big part in flattening the world because it is international. As the article showed, intelligence agencies use it, kids use it for school, and everyday people use it to search a question. The world is becoming more flat because of this online tool for everyday usage. This is because everyone has a basic access all of Google's research.

Article: New Google Tools to Make the Search Engine More All-Knowing

Google wants to improve the search engine with personalization, voice search and more. One advancement could include personal e-mails in search results, which may lead to trouble with privacy concerns. Another new service, called Knowledge Graph, will expand searches to multiple related topics. Finally, a voice activated system will let users verbally ask Google questions.
This relates to Friedman's ninth flattener in The World is Flat. In the flattener, the author describes how search engines connect users to global information, with no single individual holding an advantage over another. The new improvements described in this article will benefit all people using Google, and pave the way for more search engine technology advancements. Friedman also talked about personalized ads, relevant to the users search, increasing Google's achievement. The personalized search with e-mails and files will provide this same type of power.
The article, “Foreign Policy: UN Takes On The Internet”, discusses how a group known as the World Conference on International Communications (WCIT) is an immediate threat to the Internet because of their website known as WCTI Leaks. The website has leaked documents about governments working with older telecommunication companies, because they have lost revenues to the Internet, and the two are trying to propose global international telecommunications regulations to be rewritten. By doing this it will corrupt open access to the Internet.
ReplyDeleteThis relates to the ninth flattener in “The World is Flat” because Friedman discuses how search engines such as Google give the ability for everyone to have access to information. Now because of this huge accessibility to information, people have found ways to access classified documents, and post them on the Internet. With numerous amounts of classified information leaked, governments want to regulate the accessibility of the Internet so people cannot find information that would generally be unattainable.

The article, "Google Unveils Superfast Internet in Kansas City, MO." talks about the new "Google Fiber." Google executive, Patrick Pichette said, "We believe the Internet should give these high speeds to everyone in the U.S.” This is an example of how Goodgle is growing and expanding. They want to make Google available to everyone, regardless of where they live.
ReplyDeleteThis article relates to the ninth flattener in Friedman's, "The World is Flat." In this chapter he speaks about how Google allowed all of the knowledge in the world to be digital and at one's fingertips. Just like in the article, Friedman explains how Google wanted to expand and empower individuals to gain information. One no longer needs to go to a library to gain information.

In the article "Warning about online fraud as information theft rises" the author discusses the new rise in online fraud. Around 12 million documents of personal information were stolen so far this year. And recently, Yahoo has become hacked and thousands of passwords were stolen. Not only can the victims earn debt from these frauds, they can also be refused things like cellphone contracts.
ReplyDeleteThis relates to Friedman's ninth flattener, "In-forming," because it depicts just how easily it is to acquire information on the internet now a days. Friedman discusses in this chapter how google may be making it too easy to find information on people and this article proves that this is true. Not only can you find personal information about anyone you like, this information can be used against them in so many way. All in all, Friedman was correct in his suspicion that it is becoming too easy to find personal information.

ReplyDeleteIn the article "Got broadband? Access now extends to 94 percent of Americans", it talks about how 94% of the people living in America have the ability to communicate with anyone around the world at anytime, or upload photos to Facebook. Although, 94% is a large number, still 19 million people in the United States do not have this broadband access. However last decade, only 15% had the broadband.
ReplyDeleteThis relates to Friedmans In-forming flattener, because now almost everyone in America has the ability to reach those databases and websites that promote informing throughout the world. So it just became easier for people to find jobs and do things with their social networking, which then cause a demand for betting wireless and set off a chain reaction with the tenth flattener. So the increasing of broadband has a huge impact on the flattening of the world.

ReplyDeleteIn the article: "New Google Tools to Make the Search Engine More All-Knowing" it talks about new tools (Such as voice searches) that make searching more useful. Google's new voice search can apparently search better than Siri by Apple. Google also launched a "Gmail Tool" which helps you in pulling up pages related to emails that you may have forgotten about.
ReplyDeleteThis article relates to the ninth flattener, because it explains how Google has really flattened the world in terms of spreading knowledge. Anyone in the world can use google, and search anything. And most of the time, people can find the answer that they are looking for. Google and their new innovations have definitely flattened the world, making searching much easier and accessible to people from all over.

In the article "Haiti On Alert For Flooding As Tropical Storm Passes" the talk about a tropical storm and the dangers it poses to the people living in the area were the storm will pass. In the article it tlaks about warnings that a given out to the people through the news informing them about the incoming storm.
ReplyDeleteThis relates to flattener #9 because flattener #9 is about how people have acess to so much information. The article says that they put out news for people to access to find out whats going on. That is how flattener #9 relates to the article.

"Congress Pushes Bills To Promote Cybersecurity"
ReplyDeleteAs the Internet becomes more and more taken advantage of, the government feels that it has to impose regulations for the Internet. The article says Congress is trying to promote cybersecurity because it is so easy for people to access information on the internet. There is also the danger of hackers. This relates to TWIF because through the Internet people can become informed more easily than ever before. Rather than going to the library people can simply go on their computer and have a library of knowledge before them.

This article describes the efforts by Google to expand beyond a mere search engine. By advancing its technology, including voice-recognition services, the company has been able to integrate numerous options into mobile devices. Despite a few monopolistic decisions, Google has progressed in such a way that empowers one with great knowledge beyond compare.
With the universal access this search engine provides, limitless amounts of information can be searched and found from nearly any location. Now, in the age where mobile devices overpower desktop computers, Google has adapted itself in order to better suit these conditions. With Android phones, any user can access this very information with better technological options. This has only intensified the flattening effect in recent years, as more and more users wielding these tools, provided by Google, become increasingly similar.
