  2. Title: Can mobile phone networks cope with the Olympics?
    Link: http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-19012380

In this article the author talks about how there will be a large mass of people trying to upload pictures and send texts throughout the Olympics. He is wondering if the networks will be able to handle the large number of uploads and texts. The author says that BT thinks that about 100 pictures will be uploaded in one second during the Olympics just from an iPhone 4S.

This relates to Diamond's flattener about uploading because he talks about how with uploading people can individually upload whatever they want online. During the Olympics many people will take advantage of uploading by using their cell phones and that was what Diamond was talking about when he discussed uploading as a flattener. It allows people to put stuff online by themselves.

  3. The article "Phelps gets gold in social media at London Games," shows how almost all of the athletes have tweeted during these Summer Games. Most of the medal winners have been continuously communicating with fans through Twitter and Facebook. Also, most of the athletes have gained thousands of more followers and fans during these Olympic Games. During the opening ceremony it was said that athletes were even congratulating each other over these social networks.

This is related to what Friedman said because social networks like blogging, Twitter, Facebook and others have played a huge part in flattening the world. The Olympic Games are a show of that because even around the world, people are able to communicate with one another and say what they are doing and when. Everyone can see these posts and even reply to which the poster can then respond.

  4. The article "Gaza Crisis Spills onto the Web," explains how the recent violence in the Gaza Strip has been posted all over blogging and social media sites. The violence in Gaza was put on these sites by both Israeli and Palestinian fighters. There is propaganda going up on Facebook and Twitter to try to get more support for their side.

This is related to the fourth flattener in the book "The World is Flat". The author, Friedman, explains how social media websites flatten the world because everyone can show what that person has to say to anyone else who wants to see it. This is true, looking at how both sides of the Palestinian and Israeli conflict are trying to swing people to join their side in the fight.

  5. Article: “Dell Acquires Quest, a Big Software Maker, for $2.4 Billion”
    Link: http://dealbook.nytimes.com/2012/07/02/dell-to-buy-quest-software-for-2-4-billion/

The article discuses how the company, Dell, known for selling affordable computers, has purchased Quest software for $ 2.4 billion dollars to support Dell itself, and reach higher into the markets. The combination of this software, with Dell’s computers will allow the customers to experience a competitive server, storage and networking. With this addition, the company is looking to attract businesses that want to build and control data centers.

This article relates to the fourth flattener of “The World is Flat” because Freidman describes a similar merging/buying of software with the company IBM, and the software Apache. He describes that Apache is software that can host thousands of websites, music, videos, etcetera, and that the company IBM, was failing in the competition to create the best software, so IBM agreed to join with Apache to create the best quality software, and excel in the markets. This is similar to what Dell has done when buying Quest, so they too can succeed, and sell affordable quality computers with enhanced software.

  6. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/22/business/global/internet-analysts-question-indias-efforts-to-stem-panic.html?ref=technology

This article talks about certain Web pages being threatening to users, as well as the rest of the population. There is now a problem with online threats, inappropriate photos, and speeches of hate directed to certain individuals, religions, or races. All of these things lead to physical violence as well, and the Internet started doing everything they could to delete these Web pages as quickly as possible, but it wasnt fast enough. More and more of the worlds population was experiencing digital abuse. The government had to be brought into it, but even then, nothing was deleted any faster. Sites such as Google and Yahoo! now made it impossible to post anything threatening by deleting anything that has been flagged.
This article related to the fourth flattener in this novel "The World is Flat" because blogging is mentioned as a key aspect of uploading. Friedman explains that sites are created specifically for posting photos, videos, comments, and articles. Any of these could be threatening to another ethnic or religious group, or even a particular indivitual.

  7. In the article "China Reins In Entertainment and Blogging" talks about the new laws and restraint in blogging, telivision, and even just the plain old internet. The article says that blogging will be monitered as close as possible so they government can take down whatever they deem as a threat, or even if they just don't like what is being said. They even have suspended certen telivision shows for going over time limits, or thing with voting in them. They also put reins on what people could do on the internet. Where they could go and what they can look at.

This clearly shows that uploading has caused more harm than good in some societies around the world. This has made some of the world more closed off, round, to the rest of the world because they moniter everything so closly and only allow what the government wants the people to see and hear. This refutes the idea that uploading has flattened the world because all it has done was make te world more round and closed off.

  8. In the article "Massive Cyberattack: Act 1 Of Israeli Strike On Iran?" it states that alleged war plan was leaked to a blogger. The information that was leaked said that Israeli palnned to launch a unpredicted cyber attack. This cyber attack would take out an electical grid. This is important because the havent heard of cyber attacks this dramatic.

The way this article goes with flattener #4 was because the infromation was leaked to a blogger.Friedman talks about how anyone could upload information to the internet. This is an example of that a blogger put this inforamtion up letting people know about this attack. That is how the article connects with flattener #4

  9. The article: "Blogs 101", Rich Meislin provides many links to dozens of different kind of blogs one can have. Blogs are generally a web page where the author talks about whatever he or she wants. Other people can follow the person and read about their posts. Some of these blogs are food blogs, entertainment, crafts, sports...etc.

This article relates to Friedman's fourth flattener, because it briefly discusses the different types of blogs that exist. Blogs fall into the "Uploading" category, hence this flattener. The uploading of blogs has made communication from people to people easier as the world has modernized technologically. Blogs on food can share recipes to anyone in the world... people can gain ideas from craft blogs, and the list goes on and one. That is how this article applies to the fourth flattener.

  10. "Privacy Fades in Facebook Era"

The article talks about how because of Facebook and other social media sites, everything about anyone can be found with a few clicks of a mouse of Google. It says how the world is becoming more and more connected and that it is scary. This relates to TWIF because it says how the world is becoming more and more flattened and no longer has any boundaries or frontiers to be conquered. People can now search each other from across the globe. The world is flat.

  11. “Farmers Waiting Out the Drought Tune Into Twitter”

    http://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2012/08/24/159999270/farmers-waiting-out-the-drought-tune-into-twitter

This year, farmers utilize social networking in order to communicate with other farmers. Twitter, with its hashtag function, makes it quick and simple to see how other farmers’ fields are performing in the midst of a drought. One farmer manages two twitter accounts and four blogs, all so that he can upload information to the internet, which allows other farmers to view the progression of the growing season.

Even the most rural of occupations has held opportunity for uploading: a key flattener in today’s internet based world. This comes to show that uploading, especially via social networking sites, has expanded greatly in recent years and currently allows groups of people to become interconnected. Distance and time have no effect on this. As a result, flattening will only continue and expand to regions it has not yet impacted.

  12. http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2010-08-02-networking02_ST_N.htm

This article, ‘Time spent on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube grows,’ is entirely about the rise of the social networking, as well as blogs, e-mail, and instant messaging. It says in the article, ‘36% of peoples’ time online is spent on social networking, e-mails, instant messaging and blogs.’
This article pertains to Friedman’s argument in the fourth flattener, because in the flattener, he mentions the rise of blogging, and Wikipedia and Amazon.com. In addition to the rise of general internet-use, comes the especially popular social networking and blogs, which is exactly what Friedman was saying. Nowadays, according to Friedman, people enjoy using open-source websites, where they can post whatever they want. This is why social-networking is becoming more popular- because these sites satisfy users’ desires to post freely.
