  1. In 1990 the internet emerged into everyday life to people around the world. This connected the world globally, allowing people to be in contact even though they are countries apart. In the article "Where the Web was Born- Digital Nomad" the author explains that if it were not for Tim Berners-Lee having the idea of using a hypertext transfer protocol, 99% of people would have no internet capabilities.

Netscape, the start of the internet, opened many gates, allowing us to create the technology to make Google, and the idea to e-mail. Also, the internet was made to be accessible for a variety of ages in order to communicate long distances. The World Wide Web has changed the world greatly. Before, countries had no way of communicating with each other besides by phone or mail. By creating Netscape, and therefore, the internet, the world was flattened greatly in the ways of fast and easy communication.

  2. In the article, Gauss virus: Stuxnet-like cyberweapon hits Middle East banks, it talks about a virus that was allowing people to get other peoples tax information. The virus was also giving out usernames and passwords to other peoples bank accounts. The internet gave this virus the ability to connect someone in Taiwan, with someone in Peru bank account. The virus was called the Guass Virus, and is thought to be the same technology that America used to spy on Iran's nuclear weapons movement.

What Friedman labels as his second flattener, relates to this, because they both show how the internet has connected everyone from all around the world onto one database. Without the internet, we would not have the ability to send files back and forth across the planet in a few minutes time, which would not be good for a global economy. We then do not run the risk of viruses, like the one in the article, to occur, and give out peoples personal information.

  4. rticle: “Google pays $22.5 million to settle Apple Safari charges”
    Link: http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/08/09/net-us-google-privacy-safari-idUSBRE8780VE20120809

This article discusses how the search engine’s company, Google, has been accused of using a code known as “cookies” to ploy the browser for iPads and iPhones known as Safari, to allow the company to observe who has blocked this type of tracking. This was in violation of Google’s 2011 agreed order with the FTC. The company now is responsible for paying the amount of $22.5 million for violation, as well as disabling the code “cookies”.

This article is similar to the second flattener of “The World is Flat” because Friedman discusses that with the invention of the web browser, it allowed people to retrieve web documents, or web pages stored within websites, whereas the company’s code “cookies”, allowed them access through the web browser Safari, to monitor who had blocked such tracking. It shows how web browsers then, and now can retrieve information even with a code, but in turn, it now caused violation of users privacy.

  5. The article "Apple Boots Microsoft Out Of Top Capitalization Spot" informs the public of the change that has happened. Microsoft the "most valuable company ever" was surpassed by Apple. The market value of Apple is roughly, $624 billion. Until this month, Microsoft had the highest record of market capitalization dating back to 1999.

This article relates to the second flattner in Friedman's, "The World is Flat" because in this chapter the main focus is the world wide web and everything it contains. Microsoft and Apple Macintosh were just starting out, but already were competitive with each other. This still happens today, hence the article. The competition between companies to be more successful and powerful still occurs today.

  6. In this article, "Sky-high thinking for African internet," the author describes the new means of access to the broadband in Africa. Recently, undersea internet cables have been spread through the ocean to Africa, and with it, a great deal of speed. But, these cables are easily damaged so, a new idea had been put into action, the use of satellites. There are two satellites in orbit already, Hylas 1 and 2, with a third on the way. This new idea has brought east Africans faster internet at a much cheaper price.

This all relates back to Friedman's second flattener in "The World is Flat" because it displays how the internet is still flattening the Earth. The technology now being used for Africans is giving them access to the internet and in turn, connecting the world. This allows things like business plans and models to be easily sent to Africa where it couldn't have been before. Not only does it allow the people of east Africa to communicate with the rest of the world, it connects them to everything in the world of the web.

  7. In the article "Hong Kong Keeping Syria Online" it talks baout how there has been internet outages in Syria over the past six weeks. They state that the company keeping Syria online is based in Hong Kong.

The way that this article relates to flattener #2 is that it talks about the devolopment of the world wide web. This means anyone could connect to the internet and find out what is going on. In Syria indiviuals are able to going online and see what is happening in there country. They are able to do this because one of the main internet providers that is a company based in Hong Kong is keeping them online. That is how the article relates to flattener #2.

  9. http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/410278/Netscape-Communications-Corp

This article, entitled ‘Netscape Communications Corp.’ is all about the invention and improving of the program Netscape. It mentions how it began the ball rolling, essentially, and kept adding new features in order to keep customers coming. Some of these features include the news, and electronic mail, which has been shortened to e-mail.
This relates to and supports Friedman’s argument in the 2nd flattener, which discusses the invention of the World Wide Web, and Netscape. In the flattener, Friedman states that Netscape started an explosion of browsers, and internet use, a fact which the article also states. It brings up the fact that although it was taken over by Windows, Netscape helped pave the road of technology, when it comes to computers and the WWW.
