Article: Obama rallies supporters in rainy battleground Virginia

"'I don't want a pioneer in outsourcing. I want some insourcing. I want to bring companies back' Obama told the crowd. . ." (Allen). Obama is using Romney's support of outsourcing against him in this presidential race. In hopes of being re-elected, the president reinforces the idea that he would like to create more jobs in America, taking them out of foreign countries.

In The World is Flat, Friedman talked about how companies are improving themselves from the inside, while similarly Obama spoke of how we can improve the country's economy by keeping employment inside the United States. On the other hand, Friedman also describes outsourcing as a sort of positive world flattener, bringing countries that were once very far apart to a closer level.

This article titled "S Africa apprives 'Made in Palestine' labels" talks about how people assume imported goods into Palestine come from Israel, when in reality, they actually come from Green Line, Manyi. Since they think this, labels on goods improted from Palestine read "Made in Israel." This label was changed not just for the people who do not support Israel, but also to give Palestine the credit it deserves by identifying their products. So, the new label on these products now reads "Made in Palestine."

This relates to the eighth flattener "Insourcing" because it also talks about the importance of labels, and other forms of proper identification, on products. Being labeled properly allowd for the product to be tracked, and helps to ensure it gets delivered to the right location. Yes, the importance of labels in the book and article are a bit different, but the overal imprortance of them is clearly stated in both.

  3. The article "No borders mean flatter world will get us anywhere," talks about how little companies can act as big ones and large companies can size down. It says that small, new companies are able to compete with global giants because of new technology. In the article it says that barriers are being broken down between people and businesses faster than ever before. New businesses are beginning to pop up around the world that are starting to tap into this ever expanding playing field of the world where everyone is competition to each other.

This corresponds to the eighth flattener in The World is Flat because the author, Friedman, talks about how Insourcing is flattening the playing field around us and making it possible to compete with everyone. Friedman talks of how UPS is making it possible for small businesses to compete around the globe with all the large global competitors. UPS and other businesses like it are flattening because anything can now be shipped to anywhere in the world for a relatively low price. The article and the book relate because they both talk of how technology has made it possible for everyone to compete in a global economy.

  5. "Outsourcing, Turned Inside Out"

The article states that everyone is concerned for all the jobs that are being outsourced, while in reality it is only a fraction of the employment that goes on in the United States. The amount of higher paying jobs that are now becoming available to Americans has grown from the lower paying jobs that have moved away from America. So while jobs are moving away from America it is allowing for more high skilled jobs to be available to be insourced. This relates to TWIF because it talks about how people are working from home now and are given different job opportunities, opposed to factory ones.
